The first
stage of record cleanup is done automatically by the program. All you have to do
is import your records into MARC Magician, and the program automatically checks
them for structural accuracy and corrects ISBD punctuation, GMD, invalid indicators,
and invalid control fields.
Global Editing
Global editing means editing several
records at a time. MARC Magician provides sixteen global editing commands that you
can use to make all kinds of changes to your records, for example:
- Remove unwanted
"juvenile literature" subject headings
- Check spelling
- Correct videos that were cataloged
incorrectly as books
- Fix and update call numbers: F to FIC or fic to FIC, 092 to
B, R to REF, etc.
- Add local information: locations, prices, funds, categories, etc.

Fix capitalization problems
- And much, much more!
You can also edit your records
individually by opening them in the Cataloger. You can edit text, add fields or
sub fields, set control field values, enter holdings information, and check spelling.
The Cataloger provides cataloging tips, examples, and AACR2 rule numbers for most
sub fields right on your screen.

Active Error Checking
Active Error Checking is one of the most EXCITING
features of MARC Magician! It lets you define explicitly what sorts of mistakes
and omissions should be considered errors, including the option to check records
for compliance with Texas Library Connection standards. The program shows you right
away whether each record meets your criteria and what precisely you need to do to
fix it. You decide whether the program should warn you about:
- Upper case titles

No publication information
- No extent (pagination, 1 videocassette, etc.)
- No dimensions

Missing control field values
- No notes
- No subjects
- No holdings information
